Why is it, whenever you have something important to prepare for in school (a.k.a. the aforementioned violin boards of such great import), the people in charge see fit to toss about five million
other "things" onto your back as well.
11:00 a.m. Monday: Violin boards. As I said, the most important event of the schoolyear for violin majors.
6:50 a.m. Tuesday: Individual hearing: ten minutes of sightsinging in solfege, transposing crazy chord progressions on the piano, and tapping out insane rhythms. Those of you who have never had to deal with a musicianship class, I envy you.
11:00 a.m. Friday: 3-4 page first draft of a 5-7 page research paper due. If it wasn't for our being required to find 7 sources outside our textbooks, this wouldn't be so bad - oh. Never mind. Topic: pick one of five pieces of music to make an argument about. Do you know how hard it is to come up with a good thesis for subjects you hardly know anything about when you're trying to prepare for boards???????
8:00 pm Friday
and 8:00 pm Saturday: Concerts: Beethoven 9. Lots of fun. However. Earlier this week, our control freak of a conductor sent out an email stating that we are on a rush schedule for the Beethoven concert. Starting Friday (today), he would be hearing individual stands of strings and winds for grades as needed. Some of that symphony is rather notey (and keep in mind that the violinists are still preparing for boards, and therefore, Beethoven's Ninth is quite far from their minds).

On a good note, however, my parents are coming down to see the Beethoven on Friday. And, I've discovered that Claude Debussy had quite a biting sense of humor. If you ever get a chance to read some of his concert reviews, I highly reccomend them.
